Starting with a quote: This was in our November newsletter for the mission and it seemed to me a good one to ponder and hopefully internalize:
"As we strive to align our attitudes and actions with righteousness, then the Holy Ghost becomes for us today what the Liahona was for Lehi and his family in their day. The very factors that caused the Liahona to work for Lehi will likewise invite the Holy Ghost into our lives. And the very factors that caused the Liahona not to work anciently will likewise cause us to withdraw ourselves from the Holy Ghost today." (Elder David A. Bednar; “That We May Always Have His Spirit To Be With Us,” April 2006 General Conference)
Now, trying to recall some of the week... Yesterday was really nice...slept in late, then worked on a multitude of things one at a time with no feeling of pressure. Dad worked on a couple of projects - one of which was fixing our back door so it seals properly (it is feeling more like winter lately). We went to another ward member’s house for dinner with a “dinner group” which I signed us up for a couple of months ago. We did something similar in Canby long ago and maybe even in Roseburg, where 4 couples get together and have dinner at one of the couple’s home. I think the way we did it was to rotate monthly so that each couple had a turn at hosting. Not sure that is how it is going to work here, but it was fun to spend time with ward members and get to know a few of them better...a nice evening. My assignment was dessert - and I brought chocolate pudding cake:)
The week was filled with phone calls, mail, referrals and more. Monday we were late (as usual) leaving the office but still got to go to a Thanksgiving Left Overs dinner at the ward member’s home who had invited us to join them on Sunday. We had a good time with them and the missionaries...who gave us a Book of Mormon and challenged us to give it to someone. I finally put a Mormon.org card and an Articles of Faith card in it and now have to figure out who we will give it to:). It was Thanksgiving left overs because they had had a Thanksgiving Dinner with family the day before because they will be out of town on Thanksgiving Day:) I can always eat Thanksgiving left overs!
Tuesday of course was election day - I glanced at my laptop several times during the day to see what was happening but only got “projections.” Dad had to leave very early Tuesday morning to pick up a group of missionaries from Roseburg and bring them to a training meeting here in Eugene. I got to drive down to Roseburg with him when he took them back; then we went over and surprised Judy Jacobson and spent about an hour visiting with her. She was so happy that we had come; I really miss my weekly visits to her and others that I care about. After our visit we went to Sherm’s and got groceries and then headed home. We put a couple of TV dinners in the oven and then turned on the news at home. I finally just went to bed hoping and praying that things would turn out for the best.
I have to admit that it certainly didn’t feel that way the next morning. I struggled throughout the day to overcome my sad and negative feelings, but finally was able to truly turn it over to the Lord. My head has been trying to do that for the last couple of months but my heart didn’t really do it until about 2/3rd of the way through Wednesday. I thought Mitt Romney was so gracious in his last speech and I thought of how much he has given in his effort to help our country...I wish with all my heart that he had been elected, but have to trust in the Lord for whatever lies ahead. In my efforts to cheer myself up, I wore a regular pair of shoes to the office on Wednesday! My foot works, I am a free woman:)!!! (Many prayers of gratitude for that!)
Wednesday night we went over to River Bend and Dad had an MRI on his wrist/arm...which has not improved over the last couple of weeks. Of course, you don’t get the results right away; they told him he should get a call by Friday. So Friday, I suggested he call them. Three calls later he finally was told that there IS a break (which before they said there was not) and a torn ligament. So - now he is supposed to make an appointment Monday to see the doctor. Not sure what will be done. Goodness gracious - we need to do a better job of taking care of ourselves I think.
I didn’t take very good notes this week to be able to write here...wish I could remember better. I am beginning to feel almost “competent” in the office - that I think is a blessing.
We did get to talk with Jim, Jr., Christine, and Charlotte...am trusting that all is well with everyone.
Last thought: our trees are almost bare, the ground covered with leaves...and it feels COLD outside. (Although I am sure that is not true by Wyoming and Utah standards!!!)
