Sunday, December 9th...notes on the week past:
Monday was a truly busy day at the office; seems like I spent the whole day trying to get mail done, with a million interruptions. Lots of phone calls; lots of referrals. I ended up saving a small amount of the mail to finish on Tuesday. At 4:30 we went back to Hanger Orthotics and worked on the adjustment of the WalkAide some more. Turns out that I am very hard to really fit to it, but he had me leave with it strapped to my leg and told me to work on it and come back to see him in a week. When we got home I took it off; my leg felt very “tired” of being “zapped.”
Tuesday morning I did my morning routine and put the WalkAide back on after I have finished my exercises. Miraculously (?) it seemed to be positioned perfectly and I ended up turning it down to a “1” because higher than that seemed way too much. I made it through the day doing fairly well, but called Hanger and asked if we could stop by after leaving the office and cover the back of the cuff with duct tape or someothing like that because it was cutting into my skin too much. I also asked if it was possible to get a smaller cuff, but he pointed out that I needed the larger band to be able to reach that weird spot almost behind my knee where we seem to have to hit in order for the instrument to work. But - it does work. We did stop, made an adjustment and he filed off the pad and loosened the belt. We left there and went home for a quick Chili Mac dinner and then off to our bell choir practice. I think we’re getting better; the question is, Can we possibly be good enough in time???
Wednesday, December 5th. Made a trip to Roseburg this morning for Dad to do some delayed work on equipment, etc. at home. I spent that time gathering up things like Christmas music, stuff from the freezer and pantry, a few clothes, etc. Also spent some time cuddling Koda in the swivel rocker. Wish I could somehow get past the tears that seem to always come when I am back in the house where so many memories have been made. Anyway, Dad got his work done speedily and we picked up Judy Jacobson and went to have lunch at the China Buffet which she really enjoys. It is so hard to spend real time with anyone so having lunch together really helps. Now we are headed back to the office in Eugene; we told the others we’d be back by 2, but now it looks like it will probably be 2:30. At least we will get in a couple of hours work:).
Wednesday was good; when we got home we did a few things around the apartment to be ready for Mary’s arrival Thursday night. And...got the Christmas gift things together for the Thursday night party for the office couples at the mission president’s house. (Each couple was to bring a gift under $10.) We had a good time visiting all together with the presidency and their wives and we had a wonderful dinner - I ate far too much! Afterwards we went home for a short while; I started some dough for cinnamon rolls and then we left for the airport to pick up Mary. She arrived quite on time, but looked very tired. Turned out she had to work both jobs on Thursday and barely made it to the plane on time; we were so glad she made it - and did not awaken her on Friday morning...just left a note for her to call us when she was up and about. When she called Dad went to get her and bring her back to the office. She was able to help me with a couple of the multitude of jobs staring me in the face right now with all the transfers, departures and new arrivals which I really appreciated:)! Monday morning she will be able to help for a couple of hours before we have to go to the airport to say our goodbyes (that will make me sad); after than Dad will probably be involved in driving missionaries north or south to help with the transfers and I will get to stay in the office and contine my quest to get my work done!
We left the office at 4:30 on Thursday and headed for Roseburg and the ward Christmas party. I had invited Linda, and she met us at the church; I’d also invited Jill Garvin, whom we picked up. We had a good dinner and enjoyed visiting with each other and seeing our good ward members that we have not seen in so long a time. Linda was looking and sounding better than I had seen her so I was grateful for that; it sounds like she is doing some good things towards her own well being. We stopped at the house and picked up a couple of things on our way back to Eugene; once back at the apartment we all headed for bed. It was a long but rewarding day.
Saturday was fun; we had a late breakfast (brunch) of waffles & strawberries & whipped cream + bacon. Then Mary helped me print off Sara’s family pictures and get them up on our wall, so now the wall is more updated. Eli looks like he should be updated, but probably can do that when his little sister arrives:). We will need a new Manville family picture then too. Steve and Holly and Charlotte and Seth are invited to send us updated photos too...I thought maybe Steve and Holly might like to e-mail us the picture from their Christmas card??? We decided to go to a movie, which we did. We saw “Lincoln.” Not a movie for entertainment, but a good one - better if they had not felt the need to put in a number of words that are offensive. It does make one consider what that man and his family went through on behalf of this country.
After the movie we went to the ward Christmas party up here - Christmas in Hawaii was the theme. Another good dinner and some very good entertainment. Amazing that we had 3 dinner parties in 3 days:). I am making dinner on Sunday: Roast Beef, Mashed and Sweet Potatoes, Broccolli and Rolls. It’s about time I cooked a meal here:).
Sunday note: We had a fun Tex-Mex scramble (migas) for breakfast, went to church, came home and had the wonderful roast beef dinner. So good, so full. Have really enjoyed having a daughter as my kitchen helper once more:)! Talked with John B today and he sounded good - I’m ashamed to say I haven’t connected much with others this week. But - did talk to Jim Jr. and I think, briefly, to Emily. Hope everyone else is doing good!
Update on my Walk Aide experience: have been wearing it now for a little over a week I think and am working on the adjustment aspect. Looking forward to the next visit with the technician (or whatever he’s called) to see what we can do now.
I’m tired so will quit; have to be up on my early schedule tomorrow and get to the office on time. We plan to take Mary to the air port around 11; Dad is probably driving one of the vans starting about 1 with our transferring missionaries. Love to ALL:)!
