Another week gone by...

Sunday, October 9th

Thought I would try to catch up a little...The only thing I can really remember from Thursday was Dad going to his High Council meeting; Friday afternoon was a surprise piano lesson and then we went in to meet with the YSA Decorating committee to help work on decorations for Saturday night. Saturday was a little long... we started out by going to the funeral for Duane Stevens. Wow, what an eye-opener! It was held in the Winston chapel; when we arrived it was obvious that there were a lot of people as there were cars up and down every street nearby. Inside we found seats near the back of the gym... I made an impromtu count of the number of people in a row and multiplied by the number of rows I could perceive and came up with a number somewhere around 350, maybe more, people. We knew Duane just a little from our dealings with his jewelry shop; we knew him a lot better after the service. He was a person willing to help anyone, anywhere, anytime - the stories were beautiful; most touching was listening to his son tell about the morning that he and his father prayed to know the truth of the Book of Mormon after reading in it together - and received a witness that neither of them has ever been able to forget. I came away from the service deeply moved and deeply aware of the incredible influence a father can have on his son (or daughter); wish there were a way to really share it all with you.

We left the funeral service and did not go to the graveside service because we were supposed to meet with the YSAs working on decorating the gym for the multi-stake Hootenanny. To make a long story a little shorter, it was a little stressful, but in the end all needed things got done, we had a good (not breathtaking) attendance and everyone had lots of food and a good time. Food was chicken, potato salad, macaroni salad, chips & drinks brought down from Eugene; a talent show - interspersed with a pig calling contest, bubble blowing contest and pie eating contest - followed dinner. Square dancing followed the talent show - fun to watch how the squares improved as people began to catch on to the fact that they really had to listen to the caller and follow his commands. After the square dancing came “regular” dancing - not sure exactly how that is defined nowdays, but everyone seemed to be having a lot of fun. In short, the event was a success - we even had a few from Grants Pass, Medford and Coos Bay in addition to the Eugene YSAs - and we managed to have everything cleaned up and get out of the building about 11:45 p.m. Late night for us - but we made it home. Dad didn’t have to go to the Sutherlin ward this morning so I didn’t awaken him until 9:30... hasn’t slept in quite that long for a very long time:)!

Today was filled with church, visiting with neighbors as we came back down our road afterwards, giving away several old rabbit cages so that our neighbor would not need to build them from scratch, trying to get organized for the week ahead - and now to bed. We are ready! I should mention that when I opened my computer about 6 or so, I think all but 2 of our locations was within a degree or two of each other in temperature. Wishing you sunny skies for tomorrow ~ we are supposed to have rain!
